The department has launched a helpline to assist taxpayers in filing their returns in light of the rush, by issuing an order today.

Order stated, “ITR Fling Due Date for the assessment year 2022-23 in respect of non-auditable cases is 31st July 2022. In view of the closed holiday on 31st July 2022, being Sunday, it is hereby directed that ASK Centers throughout India shall remain open on 31st July 2022 during normal office hours. Further, special arrangements may also be made by way of opening additional receipt counters, wherever required, on 31st July 2022, to facilitate the filing of tax returns by the taxpayers.”

The filing deadline for income tax returns for the years 2022–2023 will not be extended, as the Central Government stated earlier.

Post this, Tax experts and numerous other taxpayers have been pleading with the government to postpone the ITR filing deadline. Social Media flooded with the hashtag “#Extend Due Date Immediately”. This hashtag has been used in more than 25,000 tweets on social media sites so far.

As of now, there is no Announcement for the Extension. CBDT has not yet Extended ITR Filing Due date. Tomorrow is the last hope for the extension as tomorrow i.e 31st July 2022 is the last date to file ITR.

A variety of criminal provisions are included in the Income Tax Act of 1961 to prevent tax evasion and to punish defaulters who fail to file their returns or pay their income taxes on time or in full. If the total amount of income that must be reported exceeds Rs. 5 lakh, a penalty of Rs. 5,000 will be assessed for the late submission of forms. For small taxpayers, the cost is up to Rs 1,000 if the individual’s total income is less than Rs 5 lakh.
